We get little insight into the fantastic world he lives in. The only new element is Edward’s thoughts, and sadly, they’re not particularly fascinating. It’s a “companion” to the original Twilight, a retelling from Edward’s perspective rather than that of his lover, Isabella Swan.

The book is not, in one sense, a new book. Her writing has improved substantially since Twilight was released in 2005, but her narrator-the sparkling-skinned vampire Edward-seems as world-weary as Meyer herself. She calls this book her “nemesis,” says “every single word was a struggle.” And it shows. Meyer has been sweating through this book for years, reworking it since a first draft leaked back in 2008, much to her chagrin. He is both the only selling point and the greatest flaw of Midnight Sun, the newest book in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga, which until very recently had ended more than a decade ago. It was enlightening. For someone who can read others’ thoughts, Edward Cullen sure spends a lot of time ruminating on his own. I know I’m making it sound miserable, but it wasn’t. Someone give the poor vampire boy a hug, please! It felt very much like being in the head of a teenager-the angst, the self-loathing, the tendency to make rash decisions. But Midnight Sun gave me a whole new opinion of Edward.

He doesn’t think very highly of himself at all. I knew from reading the rough draft that being in Edward’s head can be bleak. There’s just so much I want to talk about. It’s going to be difficult to review without any spoilers or hint of spoilers, but I’ll try. And while I knew I would love it, I didn’t know I would love it this much. It was a rough draft that was leaked, so of course there would be edits. I’d read the partial leaked draft several times, so I knew when the new material would start, but I was happy to see new surprises even in the parts I knew so well. I forced myself to read slowly, savoring every word. So how was it possible that the sun was rising now, in the middle of my midnight?” Stephenie Meyer, Midnight Sun It must, by necessity, always be midnight for me. “My life was an unending, unchanging midnight. Who knows if we’ll ever have new Twilight material, right? I wanted to form my own opinions, enjoy it thoroughly, with no spoilers of any kind. I went into it blindly, without reading anyone else’s thoughts. And if you haven’t read it yet (and you plan to), I would suggest you stop reading this review. Okay, so there was never any doubt that I would love Midnight Sun.
